Geography

Glen Ellyn is located in the village of [View the location of an interactive map] 4152'16 "N, 883'47" W (41.870979, -88.063011) GR1. It is a suburb of Chicago, which is located approximately 20 miles to the east.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village is the surface area of 17.2 km (6.6 mi). 17.1 km (6.6 mi) of it is land and 0.1 km (0.04 MI) that (0.30%) is water.

Demographics

What is censusGR2 2000 was 26,999 people, 10,207 households, and 7,195 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,574.7 / km (4,080.6 / mi). 10,515 housing units had an average density of 613.3/km (1,589.2 / mi). The racial makeup, that the village is 89.50% White, 2.13% African American, 0.14% Native American, 4.74% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.83% other races, and 1.66% in two or more races . 4.72% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Was 10,207 households, of which 36.7% were under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.21.

To this end, the village population is spread out with 28.4% less than 18-6.2% 18-24, 30.0% 25-44, 24.1% from 45 to 64 and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, was 91.2 for men.

The average income for a household in the village was $ 74,846 and the median income for a family was $ 95,332. Males had an average income $ 68,630 versus $ 36,287 for females. Per capita income in the village was $ 39,783. 2.8% of the population and 1.3% of families were below the poverty line. 2.4%, which is 18 and 2.0% of those aged 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

History

Deacon Winslow Churchill and family arrived in New York in 1834 to become the first landowners in an area which is now Glen Ellyn. Moses Stacy, a soldier is a war in 1812 came here in 1835. His inn, Stacy's Tavern, which was built in 1846 and his second home, was a non-stop half-way to Chicago and the Fox River Valley, and likely to stop on their way to Galena stagecoaches ROCKFORD, Illinois. Stacy's Tavern, now a historic monument, is still standing, now is the intersection of Geneva Road and Main Street-Glen Ellyn.

The nucleus of settlement shifted south of the village where the railroad came through in 1849. Although no stop was planned for the area, Lewey Q. Newton deeded right of way and that the proposed railway and create a depot and water tank at its own expense, as it would allow to stay there. This became known as the Newton station. A period of three years, a new post called the city after his birthplace in Danby Vermont.

Religious services were by the circuit riders of the first Congregational Church was established in 1862. Various Protestant churches rose from the village, and it would be more than 60 years before the Roman Catholic Maryknoll and built St. Petronille seminar.

1889 E. Thomas Hill and Philo Stacy placed so that the dam the stream near the town, forming a lake named for the glen of Glen Ellyn, where it rests and the Welsh spelling of the name of a woman's Hill, Ellen. The following year, nearby mineral springs were discovered.

1891 Glen Ellyn, advertised as a suburb of Chicago's newest and health resort, became the city's official name. Big Lake Glen Ellyn Hotel opened in 1892, the same year, a lot of the business district was destroyed by fire. Fourteen years later, the hotel was struck by lightning and burned the ground.

Glen Ellyn in 1907 the first fire department was organized. By the end of the twentieth century, would have to know when the last of all the volunteer fire organization Dupage County, Illinois. In World War I, Glen Oak Country Club served the Oak Park and Glen Ellyn Glenbard communities, and the first high school built in 1922.

The city went through several names, including Babcock's Grove, Dupage Center, Stacy's Corners, Newton Station, Danby, Prospect Park, and at the end of Glen Ellyn. [1]

* Actor Gary Sinise attended Glenbard West for a short time.
* Baseball Hall of Famer Billy Williams currently resides in Glen Ellyn.

Popular culture

Glen Ellyn is the setting for the novel The Girl Who Owned the City by OT Nelson. The protagonist lives in 734 Grand Ave, Lake Ellyn area of the village. After a virus kills all the adults it is the planet with many other children, moved to Glenbard West High School.

Glen Ellyn Glenbard West High School and used the setting in the movie Lucas, Winona Ryder in the first movie Starring Charlie Sheen.

Glen Ellyn has also been used in June 2007, witless protection movie, featuring Larry the cable Guy. The film is set to be released in 2008.

The main campus of the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn. Its most famous alumni is a comedy legend John Belushi and his brother Jim Belushi.
